Perfect For: Casual Dining; Drinks; Date Night
Standout Dishes: Thursday night 4-course tasting menu
“Are you sure we’re in the right place?” my wife asked as we blindly meandered down 13th St in Little Bohemia in search of our dining destination for the evening. This was where my iPhone GPS dumped us, but there seemed to be no restaurant in sight.
But then we stumbled upon an open wooden door and, not unlike Pevensie children in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, we stepped into another world. The oasis that is The Bohemian Gardens is nothing like downtown Omaha.
And the dining experience at BoHo Supper Club is unlike any you’ll find in the city.
The next several hours felt like a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The Bohemian Gardens beckon you to slow down, enjoy a drink or two, and feast on some incredible food.
The outdoor space is a gorgeous, sun-splashed courtyard accented by fire pits, fountains, and all manner of greenery. The patio is so gorgeous that this historic venue has become a popular wedding setting since its recent remodel.
Just inside is the Cuba Room, an open-faced shack complete with a fully-stocked bar, that awaits with beers, wines, and cocktails to help you properly unwind. The Old Fashioned, smooth and smoky, is a great way to start the night.
There are consistently fun events happening at Bohemian Gardens, from Speakeasy Nights on Tuesdays to Wednesday pizza nights, where you can grab freshly-cooked Neapolitan pizzas from Via Farina. But it’s Thursdays when this space truly comes to life.
That’s when the BoHo Supper Club and chef Chris Blazeski offer a four-course tasting menu that changes weekly. It’s common these days for restaurants to feature open kitchen concepts, but BoHo Supper Club takes it to another level; you essentially dine inside the kitchen.
The weekly dinners take place in a refurbished house transformed into a warm, intimate dining space with about 10 tables. The space very much makes you feel like a guest in someone’s living room, and chefs Chris and his team prepare your feast just feet away in a homestyle kitchen. Each night, a few lucky diners even get the chance to sit at the chef’s counter, providing them a front-row seat to that night’s show.
The menus vary week to week (you can find them and make a reservation here), but they follow a similar progression. You’ll move from a light starter to a pasta or grain, followed by a main protein and a dessert. The dishes not only taste delicious, but they bring you on a journey with flavors and textures that play well with one another.
The ever-changing menu means you can have a vastly different experience each time you dine here. Here’s the menu we had on our initial visit to give you an idea of what to expect:
- Baby Kale: Texture was king in this salad, which combined chewy, succulent kale, crispy chickpeas, and pops of fruity pomegranate. The tahini vinaigrette added a smooth, rich flavor that was vibrant and had a garlicky touch.
- Risotto: The rice was a bit firm, but the flavor was excellent. The sweetness of crab, sweet pea, and charred corn was balanced by the salinity of the lobster stock and savory cotija cheese.
- Barramundi: The fish was cooked beautifully, with a crispy skin topping a flaky, meaty flesh. The underlying cassoulet consisted of creamy beans and salty bacon, and the fennel tied it all together with a delicate freshness.
- S’mores: A fudgy brownie studded with chocolate chips and topped with a bruleed marshmallow, this was a kid’s dream elevated into an elegant dessert. The graham cracker base gave each bite a nice cinnamon hit, and Teddy Grahams added a playful nod.
The courses are well-paced, leaving you feeling neither rushed nor drumming your fingers for the next dish. A four-course meal takes roughly 1.5 hours, though that’s dictated by how quickly you eat and how good a time you’re having. The servers certainly add to your pleasure, as they’re quite attentive and are happy to explain each dish in detail.
Another visit began with a Lobster Bisque featuring a seafood stock so bold and rich I’d drink it through a straw. We moved into a pasta dish, where creamy, milky strattiatella cheese melted into the bucatini noodles (coated in pumpkin pesto) to create luscious bite after bite, then a meat course with beef cheeks so tender they fell apart if you stared at them too hard. The crescendo was a slice of savory cornbread that moved into the dessert realm thank to a nutty balsamic caramel and brown sugar mascarpone.
To be clear—these are not dainty meals. You will not leave Boho Supper Club hungry. And yet, no matter how satiated you feel, you feel compelled to keep eating, much you miss out on one more delicious bite.
Most importantly, the experience is just fun. It doesn’t feel like you’re dining at a restaurant; you get the sense that you’re in someone’s home, thought I’ve never had a meal of this quality served to me from any of my friends’ kitchens (all apologies to my wonderful hosts over the years).
The Bohemian Gardens allow you to make the night whatever experience you like. If you want to chill and enjoy a beautiful Nebraska evening with a cocktail, the gorgeous courtyard has you covered.
Want to savor a wood-fired pizza fresh from the oven? Come down on a Wednesday.
And if you’re in search of an elevated tasting menu that will help all the stresses of the week melt away, check out the BoHo Supper Club on a Thursday. It might take some navigating to find the Bohemian Gardens, but the effort is 100% worth it.
