Whether you want a sandwich or a shop, J. Gorat’s Deli + Market has you covered.

Opened in late 2025, this small spot aims to offer customers a local shopping experience. On its shelves you’ll find snacks, freshly-baked breads, honey, alcohol, and other small market items, most of which come from local producers. There are also cased stacked with meats from Wahoo Meat Locker as well as deli meats and cheeses at the counter.

But even if all J. Gorat’s sold was sandwiches, it would be worth stopping in.

The menu is relatively small, as the shop prefers to focus on quality over quantity. The bread is all sourced locally and the meats are crafted in house.

But it’s the sandwich construction that makes J. Gorat’s stand out. Sandwich artistry is a lost form that this shop is fighting to bring back. To create a successful sandwich, one must not only bring together flavors that work cohesively, but also stack them in a way that makes them easy to eat.

The Polpette Sandwich is an example of how J. Gorat’s shines. The meatballs, a combination of pork and beef that are simmered in tomato sauce, are tender and soft, but have a crispy exterior. They’re fantastic on their own.

But it’s the milky creaminess of the fresh ricotta that sets this sandwich apart from most meatball sandwiches in Omaha. And it’s housed inside a toasted focaccia roll that has enough integrity to keep the sandwich together, yet is soft enough so the meatballs don’t come spilling out on first bite.

The construction is on point again in the Cuban Press, which is one of the most balanced Cuban sandwiches in Omaha. No component sticks out or dominates, but they all work together to make a cohesive, delicious sandwich. The slow-roasted pork is smoky and a touch sweet, balanced by the salty ham. The Swiss is melted beautifully, ensuring each bite has a melty, nutty hit to go along with the tang of the dijon mustard and acidic crunch of pickles.

The bread is warm, buttery, and toasted, but it doesn’t quite get that crunchy exterior on an elite Cubano. But that’s the only gripe I have. This is one of Omaha’s better Cubanos.

And the Braised Beef is an excellent take on a French dip sandwich. The shredded beef is ridiculously tender and has a twinge of garlic. Joining it are sweet caramelized onions and gooey, mildly buttery provolone. A dunk in the rich, complex garlic jus really sets it off.

The protein in the Chicken Cutlet is prepared pretty well, the as poultry remains moist and juicy with a crispy, seasoned exterior. Portions of the fry are a bit tough, but the herb garlic aioli is the saving grace. It adds a creamy, garlicky component and moisture that pulls the sandwich together.

The flavors of J. Gorat’s salads are strong, though the execution may be a bit inconsistent. The Caesar Salad is a solid version of what it’s supposed to be. The greens are crunchy and the dressing is creamy, tangy, and garlicky, though it’s a bit dry. The opposite is true of the House Salad. The greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers are all fresh and have plenty of pop, but our salad was really overdressed. The house vinaigrette is tasty, but there was just too much of it.

The vibe inside J. Gorat’s is fun and vibrant, and while the ordering counter is inside the market, there is a small dining room with 8-10 tables. Since everything is made in house, wait times can get busy during peak meal times, so it’s best to call ahead and place an order. Or you can simply peruse all the local goods while you wait for your meal.

Sandwiches may seem simple, but doing them right requires proper flavor layering and construction. J. Gorat’s nails both with its offerings, making this newcomer one of the better restaurants to get sandwiches in Omaha.
