ROOKIES BAR & GRILL

Rookies Bar & Grill Phanatic Philly

Hoppen Hierarchy: ★★★

District: Northwest Omaha

Bar Food

Perfect For: Casual Dining; Lunch; Takeout

Standout Dishes: Phanatic Philly; Reuben

Everything about Rookies Bar & Grill screams typical sports bar: the abundance of TVs, dart boards, neon beer signs… it all brings to mind the stock image of exactly what we expect the neighborhood sports bar to be.

But when you order a dish, you discover something deeper. Because while Rookies may not be on the level of Nite Owl or Cattle Call when it comes to bars serving food, this place is pumping out much more than standard bar fare.

Tucked off 120th and Blondo in Omaha, Rookies is a humble establishment with no frills. There are framed jerseys on the walls next to Keno boards, a small patio, and a rounded bar with stools on its perimeter.

While Rookies doesn’t offer much in terms of ambience, it’s commonly packed and can often be difficult to find seating. There are two reasons for this:

  1. The staff is great. The employees are attentive and friendly, and they genuinely seem to care about your experience.
  2. The food is much better than what you’ll find in the typical sports bar.

The menu is full of the options you’d expect: burgers, sandwiches, wings, and a host of shareable sides. It’s all very straightforward; there aren’t a lot of creative twists or chef-y upgrades.

But Rookies takes these seemingly humble dishes and just cooks them very well, starting with the Cheeseburger.

It’s as basic as a burger can get: just a patty and cheese, along with pickles, lettuce, and tomato you can layer on. But all great burgers must have a standout patty, and Rookies succeeds there. These eight ounces of beef are seasoned well and remain juicy, and the American cheese drapes over it like a dairy blanket.

The bun is soft and slightly sweet, and while none of the vegetables came from the farmers market yesterday, they are high enough quality to enhance the burger. All in all, it’s just a darn tasty burger.

Rookies amps its burger up with battered onion rings, fried eggs, and bacon, but if all you want is a basic burger, Rookies has you covered.

The true star of Rookies’ menu also involves beef, but of a different variety. The Phanatic Philly is a standout, as the meat is seasoned to achieve a great saltiness. Sauteed peppers and onions add sweetness while jalapenos bring some heat. The hoagie roll is firm enough and well-toasted. The only thing missing here is more cheese, as the few slices of dairy aren’t enough to contend with all the beef.

Rookies keeps things traditional as possible with its Reuben, creating an honest, stick-to-your-ribs rendition of Omaha’s sandwich. The marble rye is so buttery you need to wipe your hands off every time you set it down, and the Swiss, 1000 Island, and sauerkraut congeal into one creamy, flavorful compound. The meat/bread ratio is a bit off, as this sandwich could use more protein.

Nothing truly stands out about the sides, but they’re all strong versions of themselves. The Tater Tots are crispy and have good texture with creamy insides. The French Fries could have a little more color and structure, but they are seasoned well.

If there’s a side dish that stands out, it’s the Side Winder Fries. They’re more potato-forward than a traditional fry, almost a cross between a steak fry and a waffle fry (without the ridges). They’re crispy with creamy middles, and the ranch is a nice pool for them to dunk in.

What I really respect about Rookies is that it understands what it is; it’s a sports bar that most people are not coming to for food first and foremost. And yet, Rookies has enough pride to take its food up a notch and deliver something above normal pub food.

This may look like your run-of-the-mill sports bar, but the food ensures it’s a cut above.
