When I was a sophomore in high school, I played on the Reserve basketball team. Because my school had limited gym space, the Varsity and JV squads got the prime practice time (right after classes ended), leaving us and the freshman team to practice in the mornings around 6AM. We’d typically get done about an hour before class started; what were we to do with that time?

We went to Vidlak’s Family Cafe.

I can’t even begin to describe all the great memories I have sitting in those booths or how many post-practice pancakes I consumed. Was it the greatest diner food in Omaha? Maybe not. But the friendly space created an environment for conversation and laughter, and I’ll never forget those times.

I think many Omahans have some version of that story at Vidlak’s. When you’ve been cranking out reliable, well-cooked food for 30 years, you’re going to help people make memories. That’s what makes Vidlak’s a staple of the Omaha community.

And I don’t want to sell the food short; it’s darn good here. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

If you looked up the term “diner” in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Vidlak’s dining room. It’s simple and unassuming, yet somehow warm and welcoming. That starts with the staff, who are friendly and eager to walk you through the extensive menu if you have any questions. Though the dining room is commonly packed (especially on weekends), you never feel the staff is rushed or trying to move on to the next table.

The decor is minimal and the chairs and booths are just comfortable enough to avoid complaints. In between all the dining room conversation you can hear friendly banter between the kitchen and the wait staff. It just feels like home.

And yet, busy as the restaurant may seem, meals are typically delivered within minutes. It’s as if you’re the only table in the house.

The menu includes all your diner staples, from burgers to meatloaf, French dips, and club sandwiches. But what Vidlak’s is best known for is its breakfast, starting with an item you’re not going to find on many Omaha brunch menus.

German Potato Pancakes are a cross between hash browns and pancakes with chives sprinkled in. The pancake batter binds the crispy potatoes brilliantly while adding just a touch of sweetness to balance the salty browns. The enormous starchy discs are served with applesauce and sour cream on the side, allowing you to take them in either a sweet or savory direction.

Vidlak’s Buttermilk Pancakes may not have the legend of their potato-infused brethren, but they’re no slouch themselves. They’re the size of frisbees, and they have a soft, pillowy interior that’s happy to drink up any syrup you pour onto them. There’s nothing crazy chef-y about them; they’re just feel-good cakes.

The kitchen gets a bit more creative with its take on the breakfast sandwich, the Eggstacy. This combination of breakfast and BLT slides bacon, juicy tomatoes, lettuce, and an over-hard egg in between two toasted pieces of rye bread (dutifully slathered in mayo). The freshness of the veggies cuts balances salt of the bacon, and if the egg were cooked less to ooze its runny yolk, this sandwich would ascend to another level.

What Vidlak’s lacks in flash and innovation it more than makes up for with just great cooking. The bacon isn’t candied or from Iberico pork, but it’s cooked to a brilliant crispiness with just the right amount of salt. However you like your eggs, you can feel confident Vidlak’s is going to hit the mark (my over easys always have soft, runny yolks and firm whites).

And the Hash Browns have a nice crispy crust, but the innards are soft and almost creamy. The textural contrast is brilliant.

The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the mammoth portion sizes, as most meals—even the aptly named Gut Buster—check in at under $15 and will satiate your hunger for the day. It’s not the most imaginative menu or the greatest diner food you’ll find in Omaha, but Vidlak’s serves delicious food in enormous portions and guarantees a godo time.

Vidlak’s has “family cafe” in its name because it’s been a family business for most of its existence and a good portion of the Vidlak family has worked (or still works) here. But the name has a double meaning; when you eat here, you feel like family, too.
